William J. Sharwood letters concerning gold and quartz mining : Soulsbyville, Calif. : mss., 1887-1904.

Copybook of letters (253 p.) kept by William Sharwood, on-site manager of the Soulsby Consolidated Gold Mining Co. of Soulsbyville, Tuolumne Co., Calif. Most of the letters are progress reports written to the company's owners and bond-holders, while others are to supply companies, iron works, and banks. The letters are generally grouped in two time ranges. The first group, Oct. 1887-Nov. 1893, contains mostly letters to David Graham, the mine's principal owner, regarding financial difficulties and comparisons to competing operations, such as the North Star Mines Co. of Amador County. The second group of letters, Dec. 1901-Mar. [1904?], follow the mine's closure and subsequent reopening, and are written primarily to investors Jonathan N. Woods and Charles S. Hebard regarding business operations and changes in technology. The volume also includes diagrams and sketch maps.
